Replacing 3.0 Kickstart roms in my Amiga 4000 with 3.1 roms chips

I am running OS4 on my Amiga 4000 desktop. While AmigaOS4 is a great technical achievement (especially on classic hardware) compatibility with older software leaves a lot to desire so the past few months I have been thinking of running dual boot with AOS3.9.

AmigaOS4.0 does not need Kickstart 3.1 roms, but Workbench 3.9 does. Thankfully today I got my hands on a second hand set of 3.1 roms for my A4000.
Replacing the two rom chips inside the Amiga is a bit more tedious than in an A500 or A1200. Not only do you need to remove the front cover, but you also need to remove the drive bay and accelerator.
I hate to mess around my A4000, especially since I have not sorted out the cable mess inside it. Some day… some day…
Ah, finally. Now I only need to remove the graphics board and CyberStorm turbo board
Here is a closeup of my CyberVisionPPC card tuned with heat sinks.

Back to the Kickstart chips again. With the turbo board removed I have full access to the two chip sockets so it is only a matter of carefully prying off the two chips.
Here are the two 3.1 chips installed in my Amiga 4000 desktop. This means I can finally install Workbench 3.9 (or AmigaOS3.9 if you are more into late 90’ies Amiga trends). I am quite happy to be able to buy these two Kickstart chips second hand.
Finally everything has been mounted together again and I am off to test if the chips are working!
